During 2015, Panalpina continued its commitment to reducing its environmental impact, with a focus on greenhouse gas emissions. At the UN Climate Talks in Paris held in December 2015, it was announced that Panalpina was one of over 100 international companies and the only logistics company so far to commit to set reduction targets as part of the Science Based Targets Initiative.

In the year 2015, Panalpina's EBIT reached CHF 117.2 million (currency adjusted: CHF 134.2 million or +15.0%) and consolidated profit CHF 88.2 million (currency adjusted: CHF 100.6 million or +16.3%). While volumes in Air Freight and Ocean Freight dropped slightly below previous year levels, Logistics achieved the first positive EBIT result for the full year.

Panalpina has received its highest Carbon Disclosure Project supply chain program score to date, reaching a score of 94 points out of 100. Furthermore, during the UN Climate Talks in Paris earlier this month, it was announced that Panalpina is one of 114 international companies that have committed to set science-based emissions targets as part of a global effort to mitigate climate change.

Dubai has become the latest location where Panalpina offers Logistics Manufacturing Services to its customers. Rather than holding stock to cover every possible outcome, Panalpina assembles products from semi-knocked down (SKD) units to specific customer requirements at the last possible stage before shipping them to the end customer.

For the third consecutive year, UNICEF and Panalpina have joined forces to fly much-needed relief goods to an African country where a recurring crisis is taking a heavy toll on society and its weakest members: children. In the morning hours, a Panalpina chartered cargo aircraft landed in Burundi with 70 tons of primary medical care goods on board.
Panalpina to acquire Airflo, a specialized freight forwarder for flowers and vegetables, from Dutch Flower Group

Panalpina is to acquire a majority stake in Airflo, a company based in Kenya and the Netherlands specialized in the export handling of flowers and vegetables. Airflo is part of Dutch Flower Group (DFG), the world’s largest flower and plant trader. The acquisition reflects Panalpina’s continued expansion in Africa and its increasing focus on the perishables business.

Three years ago, Panalpina announced its intention to deploy a single warehouse management system (WMS) across all of its logistics facilities throughout the world. Panalpina achieved a stable consolidated profit of CHF 69.3 million (currency adjusted: CHF 75.8 million or +9.5%) in the first nine months of 2015 as headwinds in oil and gas and a very soft air freight market persisted. Group gross profit decreased 6% to CHF 1,107.3 million (adjusted: CHF 1,177.0 million or 0%), while EBIT decreased 2% to CHF 92.4 million (adjusted: CHF 102.7 million or +9%).

Panalpina had to operate with a steady hand earlier this year as it assisted in the transportation of some very delicate cargo. For the Ichthys LNG Project, several large air cooled condensers (ACCs) were carefully lowered into place. With a very restrictive error margin, the team had to make sure the lifts were conducted with absolute precision.

Panalpina has kept profitability stable in the first half of 2015 despite a challenging environment. While the group’s gross profit decreased 5% (adjusted at constant currency rates: +2%) to CHF 736.1 million, EBIT and consolidated profit remained stable, reaching CHF 60.4 million (+0.4%; adjusted: +7%) and CHF 45.3 million (+3%; adjusted: +10%), respectively.

Panalpina is to acquire its Egyptian agent Afifi, a highly respected family-owned company specializing in freight forwarding, customs clearance and logistics. The move is an important step in Panalpina’s continued strategic expansion in growth economies, in particular in the Middle East and Africa. Afifi has been Panalpina’s agent in Egypt for the last 20 years.

Panalpina is adding calls in Azerbaijan's capital, Baku, as part of its long-term strategy to expand and optimize its controlled air freight network. Scheduled charters that are operated by Silk Way West Airlines and fly between Luxembourg and Shanghai now call in Baku four times per week.

Panalpina increased its operating result and profit in the first quarter of 2015. Consolidated profit increased 10% to CHF 19.6 million while EBIT increased 3% (currency adjusted: +12%) to CHF 25.3 million. Year-on-year, EBIT and conversion rate increased in Ocean Freight as volumes grew by 5% but decreased in Air Freight where volumes only grew slightly by 1%.
