E-commerce: a risky boom for international supply chains

Blog posts   •   Nov 09, 2018 12:25 GMT

Global retail online sales are expected to exceed $4.8 trillion by 2021 and e-commerce is the fastest-growing sector driving global air freight volumes. But what’s easily shopped online needs to be shipped in a safe and compliant way in the physical world. In the background, Panalpina ensures that international e-commerce shipments comply with customs, dangerous goods and security regulations.

E-commerce is the fastest growing sector driving global air freight volumes. Panalpina's global head of Air Freight, Lucas Kuehner, explains Panalpina's approach to air freight for e-commerce, and what it takes to be successful in that business where nothing can go wrong - while making sure that regular air freight customers do not lose out on capacity come the peak season.

One of Panalpina’s oil and gas customers is currently engaged in a 15-year drilling program in Oman. The customer enlisted a big steel manufacturer, to supply 62 kilometers of gas pipeline to support the project. Fast track development meant the customer required longer than usual pipes. To ensure timely shipment of this irregular-shaped cargo, Panalpina’s expertise was called upon.
