"As far as I'm concerned, there’s no separation between IT and business"

Blog posts   •   Oct 17, 2016 09:30 GMT

In this interview, Panalpina's CIO Ralf Morawietz explains why he believes the separation between IT and business is artificial and why he wants to close the gap. He also talks about the implementation of the company's new operational system SAP TM, big data, visibility in the supply chain and what he likes about his job. The original interview appeared in the Swiss IT trade publication Netzwoche.

Bruno is pretty upbeat these days. A few weeks ago, he reached an agreement with Belgium-based medical device company IBA. Panalpina will soon be offering comprehensive value-added warehousing and global transportation services to IBA from its hub at Brussels Airport. For this purpose, a new 2,800 m2 facility is being built. Construction is about to begin.

Shippers: Make sure you tick, and weigh, all the boxes

News   •   Jun 30, 2016 22:00 GMT

The new international box weighing rules for ocean freight are now in effect, stipulating that shippers of a packed container are responsible for determining and declaring the verified gross mass (VGM) per container prior to defined cut-off times. This brand-new infographic illustrates the process shippers have to follow, and explains how to determine VGM and submit the data to Panalpina.

Nicole brings it home

Nicole brings it home

News   •   Jun 23, 2016 11:15 GMT

It was a big night for Nicole and Panalpina. She has won Cardiff University’s ‘People’s Choice’ award for her work on Panalpina’s new inventory forecasting application ‘Demand-Driven Inventory Dispositioning’, in short ‘D2ID’. During a black-tie dinner at Cardiff University, the business innovation award was also officially handed over to Panalpina by Innovate UK.

Her family name is almost as complicated as the mathematics behind Panalpina’s new inventory forecasting application: Ayiomamitou. Nicole by first name and of Greek origin, she has spent most of her time in the past three years to search for the ‘hidden formula’ for lean inventories. Will her work with Cardiff Business School, Cardiff University, win the ‘People’s Choice’ award? Vote for Nicole!

Protocol, most likely, as in the Kyoto Protocol. Well, now there is another P linked to Kyoto: Panalpina. Panalpina has opened a new office in Kyoto, western Japan, making it one of very few non-Japanese freight forwarding and logistics companies with its own office in this city, which has a unique culture and style of working.

A sea of containers

A sea of containers

News   •   Feb 02, 2016 11:45 GMT

36 Million 20-foot containers were moved through the port of Shanghai in 2015. In the world’s biggest port, the very physical nature of international trade is apparent like nowhere else. Globally, 130 million containers are shipped across the seas year after year – of which Panalpina handled 1.6 million for its customers in 2014. Daryl Ridgway is Panalpina’s new global head of Ocean Freight.
