The people of Saint Martin had to live through this experience on Wednesday, September 6, as Hurricane Irma battered the Caribbean island causing widespread devastation. The category 5 storm left the island’s residents isolated and in desperate need for aid, and Panalpina was called to help.

Panalpina’s hub at Luxembourg Airport has been officially licensed by Certisys to handle organic fruits and vegetables. With Luxembourg (Certisys) and Amsterdam (SKAL), Panalpina now has two airport locations in Europe that are licensed for the handling of organic perishables. Both are directly connected to the tarmac, ensuring the shortest possible route between aircraft and transit storage.

​Panalpina has gained its largest award with a specific oil and gas major to date. The company was awarded with a long-term contract to manage transportation for a gas project in Iraq. The contract will run over a minimum of five years and involve high air and LCL (less than container load) ocean freight volumes. Work has already begun.

Panalpina recorded robust volume growth in both Air and Ocean Freight in the first half-year of 2017. As higher freight rates and margin pressure persisted, Panalpina increased its reported EBIT from 34.7 million (adjusted half-year 2016: CHF 60.8 million) to CHF 42.0 million and the reported consolidated profit from CHF 21.8 million (adjusted HY 2016: 47.9 million) to CHF 29.9 million.

Increasingly, cargo catches a train in China and then travels more than 9,000 km to Europe. Over the last few years, rail services that link Asia with Europe have become an important alternative to air and ocean freight transportation. Financial results for the first quarter 2017 came in below the previous-year period for Panalpina. The company reported an EBIT of CHF 16.4 million (Q1 2016: CHF 24.0 million) and a consolidated profit of CHF 12.4 million (Q1 2016: CHF 17.3 million). Panalpina outperformed the air and ocean freight markets in terms of volume growth as margins remained under pressure.

While Panalpina recorded the highest Air Freight volumes since 2007, gross profit margins in both Air and Ocean Freight came under pressure in 2016. This resulted in lower full-year earnings for the international freight forwarding and logistics company. Adjusted for restructuring expenses of CHF 28 million, EBIT reached CHF 109.9 million and consolidated profit CHF 80.2 million in 2016.

Panalpina has reached a new milestone in the roll-out of its single warehouse management system JDA across all of its logistics facilities around the world. The 50th site went live with JDA WMS in France. Shortly before that, JDA WMS was implemented at facilities in the USA and Belgium. The sites in Newtown and Brussels are part of a global distribution network for the healthcare customer IBA.
