In the first nine months of 2016, Panalpina recorded a slight increase of EBIT and consolidated profit (adjusted for one-offs). EBIT reached CHF 93.6 million and the consolidated profit CHF 72.6 million. Against the backdrop of receding markets in air and ocean freight, volumes increased by 9% in Air Freight but decreased by 9% in Ocean Freight. Logistics continued positively on the EBIT level.

Panalpina and Cardiff Business School have strengthened their partnership with the launch of a new Logistics Manufacturing Research Centre. The center will conduct leading research into the fields of distributed manufacturing, 3D printing, the circular economy and the impact of digital manufacturing on global supply chains. The new center has already secured its first research grant.

At the Capital Markets Day 2016 in Amsterdam, the company's senior management demonstrated how Panalpina has taken risk out of the business and laid the foundations for future growth. Cargolux has added a ‘Powered by Panalpina’ slogan to the livery of one of its Boeing 747-Fs and yesterday unveiled the freshly decorated plane in Luxembourg when Panalpina’s aircraft (Spirit of Panalpina) was at the airport simultaneously.

Cambodia’s capital city of Phnom Penh, is now home to Panalpina’s latest venture in Asia. The new office became operational in August, providing global and local customers with air freight and ocean freight services, customer brokerage, in-land transportation, cross-border trucking (with Vietnam and Thailand), Container Freight Station consolidation, and warehousing and storage services.

Panalpina Egypt has moved its country head office and 100% of its Cairo operations to the newly developed Cairo Cargo City at Cairo International airport. Panalpina is the first freight forwarding company to have its head office directly at the airport.

Bruno is pretty upbeat these days. A few weeks ago, he reached an agreement with Belgium-based medical device company IBA. Panalpina will soon be offering comprehensive value-added warehousing and global transportation services to IBA from its hub at Brussels Airport. For this purpose, a new 2,800 m2 facility is being built. Construction is about to begin.

In the first half of 2016, Panalpina demonstrated that it can compensate for contracting oil and gas business with organic growth in other sectors even as air and ocean freight markets declined. Adjusted for an oil and gas related restructuring provision, EBIT remained stable at CHF 60.8 million and consolidated profit increased slightly to CHF 47.9 million for the first six months of the year.

Cameron Kerr is supervising the construction of Panalpina’s giant new Logistics Manufacturing Services center at Dubai World Central Airport. 90% of the building has been constructed and completion is planned for mid-August. The 40,000 m2 facility will enable Panalpina to grow its logistics and freight forwarding business in the MEAC region.

The new international box weighing rules for ocean freight are now in effect, stipulating that shippers of a packed container are responsible for determining and declaring the verified gross mass (VGM) per container prior to defined cut-off times. She has won Cardiff University’s ‘People’s Choice’ award for her work on Panalpina’s new inventory forecasting application ‘Demand-Driven Inventory Dispositioning’, in short ‘D2ID’. It made the headlines earlier this year. For the first time ever, a standard farmed Norwegian salmon was worth more than a barrel of oil. While there is just one type of salmon exported from Norway, it comes in several sizes for different markets. In Taipei they normally make chops out of the salmon, so they order the bigger fish. The U.S. prefers the fillet as opposed to the whole fish.

One of Panalpina’s oil and gas customers is currently engaged in a 15-year drilling program in Oman. The customer enlisted a big steel manufacturer, to supply 62 kilometers of gas pipeline to support the project. Fast track development meant the customer required longer than usual pipes. To ensure timely shipment of this irregular-shaped cargo, Panalpina’s expertise was called upon.
