The world's logistics firms are in the midst of a digital transformation. But this is nothing new, says Panalpina's Chief Information Officer, Ralf Morawietz, in an interview with Swiss publication IT-Markt. He would like to see more common sense and composure.

Manufacturing products in Asia and shipping them across the globe is no longer sustainable – neither from a competitive nor an environmental perspective. In the new world of manufacturing, take-make-dispose supply chains are morphing into distributed, circular and sustainable supply chains. The drivers behind this development are product modularization, the makerspace movement, and 3D printing.

New York – with a touch of Chicago

Chicago is not New York. Evidently. So last year, when Panalpina decided to serve its JFK air freight customers from its Chicago office, it created a bit of a stir. People asked: Are you shutting everything down at JFK? Will you do no more air freight out of New York? Well, five months down the road, quite the opposite is the case.

Some gold medals are harder to get than others. Panalpina’s LogEx Gold is one of them. For LogEx Gold, you first have to earn LogEx Bronze – and then LogEx Silver. Only then can you reach LogEx Gold, the highest level of Panalpina’s Logistics Excellence Program. And that’s exactly what Panalpina Mexico succeeded in doing with the company’s Tres Rios 4 logistics facility north of Mexico City.

With the 76 ton subsea tree successfully loaded and secured in the hold beneath him, loadmaster Yrii Rudko’s job was done for now. Sitting in the cabin at the back of the An-124, seat belt fastened, he could feel how 400 tons of mighty flying equipment and cargo accelerated down runway 34 at Senai International Airport in Malaysia. This is part III of Panalpina's "Christmas tree" story.

It was a move to remember for life. Willi Tobler, Panalpina’s global head of transport engineering for Energy and Project Solutions talks in more detail about the challenges he and his team faced when a 76 ton subsea tree for an oil and gas customer had to be loaded onto an Antonov-124 in Malaysia. The tree’s final destination was on the seabed of a gas field located off the coast of Trinidad.

On the fourth loading attempt everything finally came into place and gone were the worry lines in the faces of everyone involved: The Christmas tree for the Caribbean was correctly positioned inside the aircraft. It had been inched past the most critical section right under the cockpit of the An-124, where the maximum vertical clearance is 4400 mm. Every single one of these millimeters was needed.

At Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, Panalpina now operates two facilities, separated by a runway. One is dedicated exclusively to healthcare products, the other to perishables and general cargo. It's like having two bedrooms in a marriage, separated by a long corridor with lots of shiny lights on the sides. An odd idea, you may say, but it can actually make perfect sense (and save marriages).
