Panalpina was recently called in for help by one of its largest oil and gas customers in Angola to avoid a shutdown at one of their main offshore platforms. A critical cargo of specialized pipes, bundles and racks had had to be moved from Malabo in Equatorial Guinea to Cabinda, Angola in a port-to-port operation, and Panalpina deployed its African Star to save the day.

Ahead of Fruit Logistica in Berlin, we looked back at the many stories on perishables that were published in 2017 and picked five that caught our attention in particular. Two are about blockchain, two about the cool chain and one, not too surprisingly about Amazon and e-commerce.

The thyssenkrupp blue.cruiser has taken an impressive second place in the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV) Cruiser Class of the World Solar Challenge. The SolarCar team from Hochschule Bochum did an excellent job throughout the race and was the first of its class to arrive at the finish line, but the Eindhoven team took the first prize thanks to a better overall standing.

Panalpina continues a string of successful new-route developments in the Americas. In little over two years of cooperation with the manufacturer of aluminum containers Crown Colombiana, and after gaining new business with the company between the US and Colombia in 2016, Panalpina has secured an additional contract to move about 3,500 TEUs of ocean freight from Brazil to Colombia.

The FPSO Glen Lyon is one of the biggest oil and gas production units ever made. During its tow from South Korea to Norway, up to 160 crew members representing 18 different nationalities worked and lived on board the Glen Lyon. But what is it like to work and live on a vessel that takes five minutes to walk from one end to the other? Panalpina talked to the captain to find out.

Between December 2015 and June 2016, the Glen Lyon traveled 15,600 nautical miles in total, traveling at an average speed of 6.4 knots first from South Korea to Norway and then onwards to its permanent location west of the Shetland Islands. Panalpina assisted BP with the tow of the FPSO Glen Lyon by taking charge of responsibilities such as material management, husbandry and ship agency services.

The FPSO Glen Lyon is a huge Floating Production, Storage and Offloading unit used for the production and processing of hydrocarbons and for the storage of oil offshore.
